COMMONWEALTH ORCHESTRA OUTREACH PROJECT

Classical Music … the old is new again and the new is us.

Commonwealth Orchestra Outreach Project, COOP for short, is designed to reboot the idea of classical music in the United States (and anyone else who will listen). Our plan: to present great music that follows the rules that worked for the great Classicists, but since we’re not in Europe in the Age of Enlightenment, our music will be about who we are now. Diverse, multicultural, beautiful.

The idea is that we can do what Beethoven and Mozart did in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Take what we know — our huge legacy of populist music — and apply it to an Aristotlean cookbook of structure, balance, gravity, and spirit. And then let the strings and winds … and percussion and electronic instruments have at it. We’ll do our own Enlightenment, baby.

We’ve found that trying to explain our Mission is a lot harder than presenting it to you. And that attitudes about the Symphony Orchestra are pretty entrenched. So education is a big part of our effort to reboot the orchestra — in schools and through this blog. So explore this site — you’ll find musical examples in our Home Grown Classical Music blogsite, and articles that explain the theory behind our Mission in our Commonwealth Orchestra blogsite. Then follow us on Facebook and become a part of a movement to bring back beautiful orchestral music to everyone.
